Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Thomas R. Smith

Posted by Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni on October 25th, 2016.

Most recently, Thomas R. Smith was the Chief Development Officer for Ogin Energy, a renewable and clean energy company whose first breakthrough was the Ogin wind turbine, a smaller and more efficient turbine that enables wind energy developers to implement wind power closer to sites of energy consumption. With more than 25 years of leadership as an executive and visionary in the energy industry, Mr. Smith is a true agent of change, helping to steer the evolution and opportunity for alternative energy, as well as find and develop top talent to build a company culture that allows talented people and teams to flourish. His deep and fundamental grasp of the energy industry, coupled with his business acumen and natural ability to foster outside-the-box strategy have enabled his effective leadership of several exciting new energy ventures country wide.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Magna Cum Laude from the University of Cincinnati, Mr. Smith went on to complete his MBA from Harvard Business School, where he was active in the energy club. He became Senior Vice President of the J. Makowski Company, which later became InterGen. Mr. Smith then served for 7 years as the EVP, PSEG and President, PSEG Fossil, COO PSEG Global, President, PSEG Americas of Public Service Enterprise Group in New Jersey. Before joining Ogin Energy, he was the CEO of Direct Drive Systems and the Chief Strategy and Business Development Officer for Composite Technology Corporation, both based in Southern California.

Mr. Smith believes that effective leaders must earn the trust of those they lead. He understands that trust happens over time, not with talk but with observed action, and that trust is critical to building a corporate culture that allows and promotes straight talk and deep, rigorous debate around problem solving. He also believes that making energy cleaner and more sustainable is and will continue to be the dominant industry trend over the next 100 years.

Today Mr. Smith resides in Sudbury, Massachusetts. When not working, he enjoys sports, exercise, and family and recently served as a board member of the California Wind Energy Association.
