Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Malcolm Pope, MD, PhD
Dr. Malcolm Pope is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Aberdeen, one of the top universities in the United Kingdom. With more than 30 years of experience in medical research, engineering, teaching and clinical practice, he is an esteemed authority in the field of occupational health, spinal problems and chronic back pain.
Prior to joining the University of Aberdeen faculty in 1998, Dr. Pope served as Director of the Iowa Spine Research Center at the University of Iowa. He was twice the recipient of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Kappa Delta Award, as well as twice the recipient of the Vienna Award for Rehabilitation Research. Dr. Pope’s research and work has also earned him the Volvo Lifetiem AchievementAward from ISSLS, O'Donoghue Award of the American Orthopedic Society if Sports Med, American Arthroscopy Association O'Connor Award, Sicot, Müller Award, Muybridge Award (ISB), and the International Knee Society Trillat Award.
Dr. Pope earned an MD from Gothenburg University and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering from the University of Vermont. A prolific researcher, he has written and been published in more than 10 medical research books, including “The Effects of Helicopter Vibrations on the Spinal System” (1985), “Occupational Low Back Pain” (1991), and “Musculoskeletal Disorders in the Workplace” (2006). Additionally, he has written about medicine and engineering for more 350 scholarly journals.
Today, Dr. Pope resides in Stonehaven, and is regularly invited to speak to medical students across the United Kingdom, throughout Europe and in China. He speaks fluent English and Swedish, and enjoys mentoring medical students across an international network. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, a member of the Royal British Legion, and Rotary International.
