Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Jennifer A. Harris
Jennifer A. Harris is the Regional Special Needs Coordinator for the Jamaican Ministry of Education; the governmental department committed to fostering an inclusive and innovative learning environment for its students with Special Needs in the Regular Education schools. With over 25 years of experience in education and administration role, Jennifer works to create awareness for special education by helping to identify and refer students for assessment, organize psycho/educational assessment of these students, advocate for appropriate placement of students with special needs in programs that will cater to their needs. Additionally, Jennifer conducts capacity building workshops for teachers who were not trained to cater effectively to the diverse learning needs of these students as well as foster awareness among the general public to adopt a more inclusive approach when dealing with persons who are challenged cognitively and physically.
Passionate about the highest standard of education for all students, and not just a select few, Jennifer received her master's degree in Elementary Reading And Literacy from Walden University in 2005. She then went on to receive a postgraduate degree in Special Education in 2014. Prior to that, Jennifer earned her Diploma and Bachelor’s degree in Special Education at the Mico University and the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.
Prior to her current role, Jennifer spent time in the United States teaching at the West Ashley Middle School in Charleston, South Carolina. Jennifer has also spent time in the Turks and Caicos Islands teaching. Outside of her role at the Ministry of Education, she enjoys traveling to foreign countries, spending time with her two children, listening to music, and is an avid reader.
As a new hobby, Jennifer has been an Independent Business Owner with Amway International Corporation in the United States for the past two years. This has allowed her to network with persons locally and overseas to promote products for personal use. Jennifer particularly likes this new venture, as it allows her to own her own business and interface with products that are environmentally friendly and organic. The education and training IBOs are exposed to help to build one’s self-esteem and allows for mind-set change in order to embrace this amazing business opportunity.
