Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Inyang Ebong-Harstrup, PhD
Dr. Inyang Ebong-Harstrup is the Deputy Director of the United Nations Officer for South Cooperation at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of citizens in developing countries by working with Governments to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Having joined the organization 1988 as a Junior Professional Officer (JPO), Inyang has been in her current leadership role since 2011 and is a highly respected international development professional.
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr College, Inyang went on to attain a PhD in Modern British History from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. She launched her career by serving as a JPO in UNDP Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania for three years. Following a successful recruitment into UNDP through the highly selective Management Training Programme (MTP), she was assigned to the UNDP Country office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as a Programme Officer for three years. Following this, Inyang served in the UNDP New York Headquarters, for a period of five years, first as a Policy Adviser in the Bureau for Development Policy, and then in the Bureau for Policy Development and the Operations Support Group Office. In October 1999, she returned to UNDP Tanzania as Deputy Resident Representative and also acted for one year as the UNDP Resident Representative a.i. In August 2002 she took up her first appointment as UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative (RC/RR) in Trinidad and Tobago, and also served as RC/RR for Suriname, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. Most recently serving as the Associate Director UNDOCO for 3 years, Inyang took on her current position as Deputy Director in 2011.
Today, Inyang resides in Guttenburg, New Jersey. She has written about her early career experiences, and credits her success to having the discipline to “stay the course”. Outside of her work with the UNDP, she continues to be an active advocate and voice for Social Development good Governance.
