Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Emilio Pérez Castellón, PhD
Dr. Pérez Emilio Pérez Castellón is an expert in natural resource management, and rural farming methods related to sustainability. Dr. Pérez Castellón is an accomplished agronomist with a particular expertise in climate change and food security, and currently works as a consultant. He taught natural resource management and agronomy courses for 35 years and conducted researched in agronomy, sustainable farming and natural resource management at the National Agricultural University of Nicaragua (UNA).
Dr. Pérez Castellón knew he loved nature as a young boy and wanted to work in a field related to natural resources. Early in his educational development, he realized that the most rural areas with many farms need the appropriate methodology for sustainable farming. This is why he focused on educating himself and conducted his own research in this field. Emilio has greatly enjoyed working in agronomy and trusts that the many students he has prepared to enter the profession will conduct further work in agroforestry, agroecology, soft sciences methodology, and sustainability. Emilio views this as his great professional accomplishment.
Dr. Pérez Castellón retired in 2016; however he still teaches occasionally and is a consultant in the area of sustainability and natural resource management. He currently spends his time developing a small family farm in a rural area of Nicaragua, where he employs the methodologies and techniques he has taught about and researched. He also plans to develop and assist in the implementation of an environmental education program for children in schools.
Completing his Post Doctoral studies as a Visiting Scholar of Agro-ecology at UC Berkley (2006), he earned his PhD in Natural Resource Management from Cornell University in 2000, and a MS in Agroforestry Systems at CATIE in 1990. He began with a BS in Agronomy from the National Agricultural University in 1983. He is a member of the Agronomist Association of Nicaragua, Forestry Society of Nicaragua, and Agricultural Education and Extension Nicaragua.
He and his family sponsor an annual Christmas Fair in the same rural community of Nicaragua. They provide food and gifts to the entire community prioritizing single mothers and the elderly members of the community. He looks forward to connecting with fellow members from all around the world primarily those interested in climate change, food security and sustainability.
