Charlotta Collén is a Senior Advisor for Research at the Finnish Ministry of Defence, the leading authority in the area of national defense, national security and international cooperation with regard to defense policy. The Ministry provides all military resources and oversees the Finnish role in international crises, contributing to the security structures of Europe and upholding national defense capabilities.

With over 14 years of experience in political science, international affairs and research, Charlotta has been in her current role since 2015. In her role, she is part of the research team designing and procuring reports and studies to inform strategic decision-making, according to political needs and mandates. She works with both national and international think tanks, research institutions and Universities. A senior official, she works with the Prime Minister’s office, helping to form their research agenda and foresight work. The role has proved to be a perfect pairing of Charlotta’s strengths in foreign and defense policy, and her knowledge of research and academia.

Charlotta graduated with a Master of Science in Social Sciences from Åbo Akademi University in 2003. She also pursued a PhD at University of Helsinki and the London School of Economics and Political Science, and will submit her doctoral thesis in the Spring of 2017 to the Åbo Akademi University. Driven by a lifelong passion, she decided at an early age to pursue a career in this field.

Charlotta credits her success to having a strong sense of networking while at her university and never losing heart. Also, Charlotta has worked in many countries in various types of roles, a variety which impelled her to keep going as she thrives in international environments. Charlotta resides in Helsinki, Finland and speaks Swedish (first language), Finnish, English and French. She is part of the Finnish Political Science Association (FPSA) and the watchdog organization for social science professionals, YKA.

When she's not working, Charlotta enjoys downhill skiing, tennis, running, reading, movies and music. She also supports NGOs such as the WWF and Plan Finland.
