Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Amy Elizabeth Spurgin, LCSW
By the age of three, Beth knew that she wanted to work in a field that required her to help others overcome emotional issues and become the very best versions of themselves. Although she comes from a loving family and is still incredibly close with her mother, her childhood was far from perfect. She endured episodes of trauma in her childhood and has since not only overcome the emotional pain associated with these events, but has become a much stronger person than she was before. It was these experiences that led her to pursue a career in Social Work, by enrolling in Austin College's Psychology program. Today, she is a Clinical Social Worker in Santa Fe, New Mexico, graduating with honors in 1996. Having more than 21 years of diverse experiences, Amy affiliates with no hospital, and cooperates with other doctors and specialists without joining any medical groups.
While attending Austin College, Beth participated in the Drama Club, even though she worked several jobs throughout her entire collegiate career. Upon her graduation from Austin College in 1994, Beth continued her studies at The University of Texas at Arlington's Social Work program. Upon obtaining her MSSW from The University of Texas at Arlington in 1996, Beth began working for the Santa Fe Police Department's Domestic Violence Division. Since then, Beth has worked at many other organizations in counseling, and currently works as a Behavioral Health Counselor for Christus Health in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has been working in this capacity since 2011 and conducts assessments and counseling in the emergency department as well as providing individual and family therapy sessions. Additionally, she also does treatment planning for those in receiving acute treatment.
Her area of specialty is working with patients with behavioral and health problems who are obese, uncovering the root of their issues with food and develop effective weight loss programs. She is a believer that education is a lifelong process and obtained a Certificate in Mediation from The University of New Mexico School of Law in 2011.
Beth attributes her success to her strong support system as well as her own experiences in overcoming adversity. In addition to the traumatic experiences she endured in her childhood, Beth also has Multiple Scleroisis, and has several instances of eating disorders in her family. This experience has enabled her to really understand what her patients are going through. She strives to make her patients not only return to the place that they were before their troubles, but make them stronger than they have ever been. Beth wants to use her expertise to do more work in group settings regarding domestic violence and substance abuse matters. She wants to get more active with her community so she can bring her message to a larger demographic as well as do more public speaking events. She is affiliated with the National Association of Social Workers, Multiple Sclerosis Association, and The Trauma Institute.
