Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Dr. Gareth I. Owen

Dr. Gareth I. Owen is the principal investigator and administrator of a cancer research laboratory dedicated to developing molecular and cellular diagnostic assays in the field of personalized oncology. His laboratory takes a more individualized approach to better tailor patient response to chemotherapeutic treatment and has developed a hospital research network throughout Chile. His team researches and validates predictive biomarkers for patient response and also delves into cancer angiogenesis and the role of the coagulation system in cancer metastasis and vasculogenic mimicry.

 

A British scientist, Dr. Owen completed his undergraduate studies at King’s College London, then went on to receive a PhD in Biochemistry from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital, London (Imperial College). Dr. Owen performed fellowships at the University of Colorado USA and at the Institute of Cancer Research, UK. Dr. Owen is currently a tenured Professor at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, where he teaches endocrinology and oncology, principally in the careers of biology, biochemistry and medicine. With over 15 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Owen is a seasoned and well-published researcher and has graduated 14 doctoral students, many of whom are now academics in other universities around the world. His research focuses on understanding and investigating cancer as he leads the way for the next generation of cancer researchers to follow.

 

In his now adopted country of Chile, he is co-founder and a principal investigator of the Biomedical Research Consortium of Chile (BMRC), a board member of the Cooperative Group for Clinical Investigation in Oncology (GOCCHI), Deputy Director of the Center UC in Translational Research in Oncology (CITO) at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, and executive committee member and director for investigation within the Chilean National Cancer Forum.

 

Dr. Owen credits his success to his passion for research and knowledge, and he shares his expertise by helping promote public health policy and an infrastructure within Chilean society to confront the imminent burden of cancer. He resides in Santiago de Chile with his wife and family.
