Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Michael Cook, PhD

Posted by Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni on January 20th, 2016.

Dr. Michael Cook is an applied mathematician by day, and a poet/composer by night.

In college, Michael studied theatre and film, until he discovered he was interested in the history of science, systems theory, complexity theory, and the brain. Michael distinctly remembers the moment he decided that mathematics would change and enlighten his life. While at the library, the book "Brains, Machines and Mathematics" by Michael A. Arbib, caught his eye and he read it. This solidified his already strong curiosity and passion to learn, and further inspired him to pursue his extensive education of mathematics.

After obtaining his PhD in mathematics from the CUNY Graduate Center, Michael worked in the labs of two Nobel laureates at Rockefeller University, researching computational models in neuroscience and molecular biology. He has published several peer- reviewed articles in science and mathematics. His interest in complex systems led him to the study of economic thinking and financial markets, and he moved from academia to Wall Street, where he spent 15 years applying quantitative methods to the investment process.

After the financial crisis of 2008 Michael migrated into the new field of "People Analytics", the application of data science to the field of Human Resources, and he has given talks all over the world on his research in this area. His interest in predictive analytics and statistical modeling led to his current position at Citigroup, as a senior manager in the Model Risk Management group.

Michael has also authored and published a book of poems, "The Rise And Fall Of The Mind," and has written the music for, and produced two Off-Broadway musicals. In 2008, he produced a CD of songs he has written, The Sun Shines at Midnight.

Michael lives in New York City, with his wife Melissa, where he continues his explorations of mathematics and music, in the tradition of Pythagoras.
