Dr. Jochen Fries is Professor of Pathology at the University Hospital of Cologne and a senior pathologist whose expertise is molecular nephropathology, with a special interest in renal tumors and biomarkers of renal tubular damage. Dr. Fries’ many responsibilities regularly have him working across several departments such as nephrology, cardiology, urology and ENT, including adult and fetal autopsy and diagnostic specimens. He is extensively published, and maintains several professional affiliations with various medical and educational institutions worldwide. Dr. Fries graduated from the University of Mainz and trained at Johannes Gutenberg University Hospital Mainz. From 1984 to 1992, He worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Boston (experimental nephropathology: Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) 1984-1987; molecular mycobacteriology: Harvard School of Public Health, 1987 – 1989; vascular research 1989-1990), and as an instructor of pathology in the vascular research division at the BWH from 1992-1997. His also did a residency training in pathology at the BWH till 1997. When not working, he enjoys skiing, sailing, and swimming. Dr. Fries is especially keen on Near Eastern archeology and has often traveled throughout the region.
