Javier Targhetta is the President of Atlantic Copper, a Freeport-McMoRan Company and the second largest copper producer in Europe. Based in Huelva, Spain, the company operates a copper metallurgical complex and was recently honored by the Andalusian Academy of Social Sciences and the Environment “for its contribution to innovation and technological development”. He has been a fixture of Atlantic Copper for over 25 years.

In addition to being at the helm of Atlantic Copper, Javier is the Senior Vice President of its parent company, Freeport-McMoRan, the United States-based company that ranks as the world's top copper producer and top molybdenum producer. Freeport-McMoRan is also prolific in its production of other commodities, including cobalt, oil and gas, and gold.

After completing an Engineering degree in Mining Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Javier went on to fulfill the PADE Business Administration course at IESE Business School, University of Navarra. Always eager to share his knowledge and give the next generation of engineering and business professionals a leg up, Javier recently became Professor Ad Honorem at the School of Mines & Energy, Polytechnic University of Madrid, where he has taught as an associate professor for the last decade.

Javier has served as Chairman of Eurometaux (the European Non-Ferrous Metals Association), and President of the Association of Enterprises with High Energy Consumption (AEGE). He also was the Chairman and CEO of Spain’s largest containerized shipping company, the Transatlantic Spanish Company, and of Spain’s largest bulk shipping company, Empresa Naviera Elcano, SA.

A pillar of his community, Javier is an environmental activist and sponsors the summer camp School of Explorers. He lives with his wife and two daughters, and is always seeking new outlets for youth educational initiatives. He speaks English, Spanish, German, French and Italian. In his spare time, he enjoys skiing and playing golf.
