Worldwide Association of Notable Alumni Recognizes Gary D. Kukes, M.D.
Dr. Gary Kukes is the Principal at Physicians Healthcare Negotiations and in private practice in Rochester, Minnesota. Previously, Doctor Kukes served as a Staff Pathologist in the Veteran Affairs Healthcare System for nearly three decades, during which time he was also an Associate Clinical Professor of Pathology at the University of California, Irvine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Pathology and a Diplomate of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology of the American Board of Pathology.
Dr. Kukes holds a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), from where he later earned his Ph.D. in Neurophysiology and Neurochemistry before graduating with an M.D. from its medical school where he received a full Regent’s Scholarship from the University of California. After completing his residency at the university’s Department of Pathology, Dr. Kukes worked as Associate Pathologist for Sherman Oaks Hospital and Simi Valley Community Hospital. He next returned to UCLA as Head of Immunohistochemistry at the Tissue Typing Laboratory of Dr. Paul Terasaki in the Department of Surgery. Over the course of his career, Dr. Kukes has published eighteen peer-reviewed articles in professional journals and twenty reviewed and accepted abstracts. His research interests include membrane transport mechanisms in astrocytes and use of multiple regression analysis to diagnose malignancy in cytologic specimens.
In his personal life, Dr. Kukes cares deeply about human rights, the environment, and poverty alleviation, and is a benefactor of the Medical Alumni Association at his alma mater as well as its Department of Neurobiology.
